MILDRED JEANETTE APPLEGATE, was born on October 3, 1922 in Emporia, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Fred and Irene L. (Shaw) Magathan. Mildred grew-up and graduated from Emporia High School in 1939. She married Jack Applegate on December 21, 1941 in Wichita, Kansas and they made their home in Wichita, Kansas until moving to Portland, Oregon in 1954. They were married and celebrated their 62nd anniversary before Jack preceded her in death in 2007. She worked as an attendant secretary for David Douglas High School for several years before she went to work for Mt. Hood Community College doing office work in the Veterans Department until she retired. She also graduated from Mt. Hood Community College with an Associate Degree. She was a member of the Forest Hills Golf Club and she and her husband were instrumental in starting the Sandy River Chapter of Northwest Steel headers, where she was the first female president. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her brothers, Richard, Nelson and John Magathan. She is survived by a daughter, Anita Wold of Beaverton, Oregon, a son, Larry J. Applegate of Tillamook, Oregon, a brother, Merlin D. Magathan of Emporia, Kansas and by a sister, Marguerite Magathan of Emporia, Kansas. She is also survived by five grand-children and eleven great grand-children. The family suggests remembrances to the charity of your choice in her memory, or to plant a rosebush in your yard and when you look at it’s beauty, think of her.
